The 9th Nutra India Summit held in Bengaluru from the featured a session on R&D INNOVATION IN INGREDIENTS chaired by Dr. V. G. Dhanakumar - Director, Indian Institute of Plantation Management (IIPM), Bangalore, Dr. Deepak Dave - Medical Director, Kasturba Health Society & Medical Research Centre, Consulting Gynecologist and Head of Dept. Ob. Gyn. BSES MG Hospital and the speakers were Mr. Dan Souza - Senior Director of Sales and Marketing, Naturex- DBS, USA, Dr. Jatinder Rana - Senior Principal Research Scientist, Analytical Sciences, Amway R&D, USA, Dr. David Cai - Senior Regional Manager, Scientific Marketing, Regulatory and External Affairs BASF (Asia), Human Nutrition (ENH), Nutrition and Health,China and Dr. Jagadish Mittur – Head – Biotech Facilitation Center, KBITS.
Mr. Dan Souza speaking on the full spectrum of cranberry for prostrate and urinary tract health. Said, “Naturex, was founded in 1992 and leads the botanical world and has a turnover of 300 million Euros. It is the first company to use cranberry to health and focuses on full spectrum of the cranberry fruit. Urinary Tract Infection is the second largest bacterial infection the world which is caused by E.coli. the bacteria enters into the body forms a biofilm and the infection occurs. The use of cranberry inhibits the fimbriae adhesion and stops the growth of the bacteria which inhibits the cause of the disease.”
Further he said, “The cranberry extracts is not used because of the adulteration and PAC, the amount of PAC required is 36mg/d. But it has been found that several commercial extracts have a to very In Dec 17 2012 AFFSA health claim was removed because of the lack of substantiation of the use of cranberry extracts. There are 5 levels of substantiation, they are: Proof should be given that the extract used is cranberry extracts, It should have the standardized PAC value, The extract should have adhesion property to E.coli, It should clinically show the reduction of UTI, It should be safe and have health benefits and The Cochrane review in 2012 revealed that cranberry juice is not useful to diagnose UTI after going through a set of reviews based on it. A study was conducted on 319 college girls for duration of 6 months with the cranberry juice to diagnose UTI and the results showed that it did not have any effect on the bacteria. The effect was only seen when the PAC was removed from the extracts of cranberry fruit.”
Dr. Jatinder Rana a PhD in organic chemistry from UK & also a contributer for the radio synthesis of organic molecules spoke on new approaches for the development of functional botanical and ingredients for innovative products said, “extraction of the ingredients, reaction of them and screening of ingredients has seen a sea of change from the earlier times. For example fresh herbs are modified to dried herbs and further modified to tincture herb and extraction of herbs and finally to the standardized herb extract namely Phytomedicine – the medicine which is extracted from plants.”
All over the world only 6400 acres of organic farmland is found suitable for the production of botanical ingredients. And these are situated only in U.S , Mexico, Brazil and China. The high quality required begins with the ingredient screening process, in this process ingredients extraction and planting are a full two years procedure that requires extra care to be taken.
Dr. David Cai who spoke about 'heart healthy ingredients for Indians' - a case study of plant sterols. Said, “The increase in level of LDL-cholesterol (low density lipid) leads to atherosclerosis which leads to the narrowing of blood vessels. 12.6% males between age group of 35-59 in Asia have total cholesterol level of >6.5mmol. The plant sterols are natural components of human diet. The average intake is 160-400mg/d which is not enough. The intake of approx 2g/d results in the decrease of LDL-cholesterol by 10%. The plant sterols decrease the absorption of cholesterol by 30-60% therefore having a physicochemical effect.”
“The plant sterol is independent of fat content of food, used in cheese, yogurt drinks etc which decreases the total cholesterol level. An experiment was done where 1.8g/d of plant sterol with 3 times exercise per week was done for 8 weeks which resulted in the decrease in the LDL - Cholesterol level. Most of the Asian countries have approved the legislation of plant sterols. The key to success for the use of the plant sterols is - It should not have side effects, It should be recognized by most of the health organizations and It should be in synergy with the life style.” he said.
Dr. Jagadish Mittur, spoke on the Government of Karnataka's efforts towards promoting entrepreneurship in nutraceuticals. He said, “one of the key efforts that we are taking is towards nutritions for animals. Lot of work is being done in that area. For example Dharwad Agricultural University has been opened recently and in Bangalore 40 acres land has been allotted for IC and CAR institution, which is helpful for the development for the agriculture. Currently we are seeking young peoples in 2 domains, namely Management Science and Food & Pharmaceuticals. And even seeking investors. Padmashree Institute Bangalore, a BT finishing school is working extensively on Nutraceuticals and has shown good results."
